(For readers on planet.g.o: This one is in German language only, but i do consider this important enough to be published on planet.g.o although.)

Schade.

In the past few months (basically for nearly a year *cough*) I was working on another book, now that this one is finally done and probably will hit bookstores this month I’m somehow back. At least I’ll have much more free time for all things Gentoo :)

Sadly this project had some (minor?) impact on being member of Gentoo’s council for nearly a year now. I wasn’t able to be as active as I would’ve liked to and couldn’t spent as much time as I would’ve liked to. On the other hand I only missed a single meeting (where ulm proxied for me) and (at least that’s my pov) I was always well enough prepared for council meetings. But still then, I’m not sure if I should run for the next council again. I’m thinking of lots of pros and cons for quite some while – but well, there are still some days left to decide whether to accept or decline the nomination.

That being said, today I did shut down the gentoo.de Portage Overlay which was one of the oldest overlays around (it started somewhen in 2001/2002 iirc). SVN and distributed version control systems and also Gentoo’s Sunrise project made it quite easy to setup your own overlay – or just use Sunrise. There was no need for the gentoo.de Overlay anymore, therefore the decision was made to shut down the service on March 31th. Well, it took some days longer than announced – but the overlay is gone now.

Some months ago I had an interesting discussion with a fellow Gentoo Developer. His proposals were quite similiar (at least partially) to the ones Donnie wrote about in his post “Steps toward improving Gentoo“. Well, still … for me this proposal(s) sounds like a good (probably even the best) way to demotivate people and make them stop spending their rare spare time working on Gentoo.

Gentoo is about having fun, period. I’m doing this for fun, I bet you do as well.

Setting expectations and removing “underperforming” Developers won’t solve anything, well … it would make things even harder for the few ones left. Remember, every little minute we do spend for working on Gentoo is spent for fun and because we want to do so, not because we’re on Gentoo’s payroll. For now Gentoo’s biggest problems these days aren’t not met expectations or underperforming Developers, the biggest problem is a huge lack of man-power. Simply put, Gentoo needs you!

Bringing new people aboard should be Gentoo’s main goal for now. Identify areas we’d need more help with, start to more actively recruit people for these areas, one by one. That would improve Gentoo.

Some 9 months after the first version of Nagios 3 has hit Gentoo’s Portage Tree (3.0.1 it was) it’s time to get it marked as stable. This morning I filed the request for our architecture teams, they will hopefully soonish get the packages keyworded as stable for their architecture.

The most notable change from Nagios version 2 to 3 (wrt Gentoo packaging) was to change installation paths. Up to version all Nagios related packages got installed in /usr/nagios – this has now been changed to a more FHS-compliant directory structure. For example it’s binaries are now installed at a location you’d expect them to be – /usr/{bin,sbin}, Nagios Plugins are now installed in /usr/{lib,lib64}/nagios/plugins and so on. If you’re looking for a list of general changes and improvements there’s for example the Nagios 3.x Version History.

The following package atoms will be marked as stable:

=net-analyzer/nagios-3.0.6
=net-analyzer/nagios-check_logfiles-2.3.2.1-r1
=net-analyzer/nagios-core-3.0.6-r1
=net-analyzer/nagios-imagepack-1.0-r100
=net-analyzer/nagios-nrpe-2.12-r102
=net-analyzer/nagios-nsca-2.7.2-r100
=net-analyzer/nagios-plugins-1.4.13-r1
=net-analyzer/nagios-plugins-snmp-0.6.0-r1
=net-analyzer/nagios-sap-ccms-plugin-0.7.3-r1
=net-analyzer/pnp4nagios-0.4.12

One thing still missing is Gentoo’s Nagios Guide which Sven Vermeulen started to write some time ago and for which I offered some help – well, sorry … didn’t had time for this one yet :(

But if you’re looking for some documentation on getting started with Nagios 3 there’s a new book, Learning Nagios 3.0, by Wojciech Kocjan published last October. Lucky me I got a copy of this book for a quick review :) Starting with an introduction to Nagios and description of changes in version 3 this book guides you with setting up your own Nagios monitoring box. From installation, an overview of the Nagios Web Interface and Nagios Plugins all important parts to get started with Nagios are covered – including passive checks via NSCA, remotely executed plugins via NRPE and distributed monitoring. Very useful is a dedicated chapter on SNMP which also describes receiving and integrating SNMP traps with Nagios.

For people already using Nagios chapter 11 is probably the most interesting one. “Extending Nagios” has hints on getting started with monitoring a VMware Infrastructure using VMware’s Perl API and how to monitor a website effectively – it’s not only good to know that the website it’s reachable but for example also logging in to an onlineshop does work.

If you need a book to get started with Nagios – Learning Nagios 3.0 (TOC) is a good read.

5 years since I’ve joined Gentoo as a developer on December 7th, 2003

oh … and

We’ll have 2 tables for our FOSDEM stand. Sadly our dev-room request has been declined :(

105 (out of 245) voters participated in the election for Council’s open seat. Congratulations Tiziano! Interesting to see that voters reconfirmed the last election and ranked the (again running) candidates exactly the same like in the last election. Also the newly running _reopen_nominations candidate was ranked last!

bug 250000 reported in Gentoo’s Bugzilla (which is in fact only the 217642th bugreport). Andreas Proschofsky reported that “wonderful bug number“.

So, yeah … I still think Gentoo is about having fun :) Speaking of “fun” … there’s a quiz taking place on gentoo.de (targeted at German speaking users) where you can test your knowledge on Gentoo and maybe win an interesting book.
